L-theanine is an amino acid found almost solely in the tea plant and has been shown to modify the key neurotransmitters involved in mood, focus and memory.
L-theanine enhances the production of the neurotransmitters dopamine and serotonin, and also appears to play a role in the formation of GABA: a neurotransmitter that acts as a stop sign during stressful times. This means that L-theanine helps to balance mental, emotional and physical disruptions from long-term stress or poor sleep patterns.
It increases serotonin production and alpha-wave activity in the brain, which results in a better balance in our neurotransmitter system, and improvements in the emotional and physical symptoms we may experience from being highly stressed.
